How
important is it that my Nanny meets others in her field?
According to Glenda Propst, Co-president and Co-founder of the National Association of Nannies "It is important for children to have the social interaction, but for the sanity and happiness of your nanny it is equally important for her to have a good support system in place. No one understands like another nanny. If you have friends who have nannies, it is a good idea to introduce your nanny to other nannies. There are many support groups across the country. We list the most current on the NAN website. You might encourage your nanny to find a support group in your area, or if there is not one, maybe she could start one with other nannies."
The following are some great links for Nanny networking
National Association
of Nannies: lists all the nanny support groups around the country, and if
there is one in your area, this is a very good way for your nanny to get out
and meet other nannies. Many support groups offer educational workshops, nanny
playgroups and social interaction.

How can I get her
involved with other Nannies ?
Have you thought about having your nanny do a Nanny playgroup? This is a great
way to help your nanny meet other nannies and your children to make new
friends. Playgroups can be a lot of fun too. One PWN member told me that her
nanny group goes on outings, holds holiday parties, does crafts together and
more. The nannies also did social things without the kids sometimes on the
weekends.
I had a boss that once gave a nanny tea in my honor. She invited all the nannies in her area, About 5 nannies, to come meet me and ordered pizza and supplied with sodas. Not really a tea party but it was lots of fun and I met several friends that way.
Another idea is to have your nanny sign up for a couple of adult education classes (if she's interested, that is.) This will get her out of the house a few nights a week and hopefully she'll be able to meet a few people her own age.
One thing to keep in mind when encouraging your nanny to get out and meet people. We are all different. Some people are just as happy to stay home and curl up with a good book. If she tells you she's fine and doesn't worry about making friends, then you shouldn't either. It is not uncommon to hear parents who initially worried that their nannies weren't social enough, later complaining that their "party animal" nannies weren't coming home till the wee hours of the morning. So, as the saying goes, just be careful what you wish for. It may come true.
Will Placement agencies
help nannies network ?
Some will, some won't. It never hurts to ask. Tell them you'd like to help your
nanny make new friends. Do they have any families in the area that they think
might want to arrange playdates, etc? Some agencies hold holiday functions,
summer picnics and other networking opportunities for their nannies. This
is a good question to ask an agency prior to making your decision to use them.
What does the Internet
have to offer Nannies?
For those of you looking for a list for your nanny, there are quite a few non
specific lists on YahooGroups.com. There are also many "nannies only" message
boards. Also checkout http://nanny.meetup.com.
